San Diego County Administrative Center

I had some time to wander downtown and stopped by the San Diego County Administrative building near the Maritime Museum of San Diego. This is a beautiful building was completed in 1938. The inside is very utilitarian, including an office to pay your property taxes in person. However, there are several murals in chamber where the Board of Supervisors meet on the third floor. I couldn't get in, because the chamber is only open during meeting. I was disappointed!
In the front plaza of the building is a large statue called "Guardian of Water" by Donal Hord. This attractive piece had a great view of the two cruise ships in the harbor that day - Holland America and Disney Cruises.
On the south side of the Center is the compact, but charming Waterfront Park. This has a nice play structure created by noted French artist Nikki de Saint-Phalle - her work is also in Balboa Park. There is a large shallow, splash fountain, restrooms, a small cafe, climbing structures and green space. The Park is a few blocks from Little Italy and a very pleasant walk to Seaport Village.
