Desert View Tower, between Jacumba and Ocotillo, CA

The Desert View Tower is a well-known landmark along I-8.  Perched at elevation, it offers an amazing view of the desert panorama, including the Salton Sea.  The Tower is packed with strange artifacts; memorabilia; books - from local history to the obscure; a player piano; random clothes for sale; snacks; minerals; drinks; dogs; and more.  I bought a nice book about the history of Campo.  A winding wooden staircase takes you up 70 feet to the top with the amazing landscape below.  The Tower was built between 1922 and 1928.

Across the parking lot is the Boulder Park, which features carved and painted creatures along a steep, short, rocky trail.  Not for the very tall or those not surefooted.  The Boulder Park was created in the 1930's.

The website is not current.  One link takes you to a Filipino gambling site!  The Facebook page is current.  There is a good description of the history on Wikipedia.  It is open daily from 9AM - 5PM.  The road off the exit is a bit rough, but it is worth it.
