Holy Nata near the Financial District, San Francisco, CA
My favorite thing to eat in San Francisco is pastel de nata. This little tart is an egg custard in a buttery, flaky puff pastry. Move over kouign amann; forget about macarons; I'm over it, biscotti. I want pastel de nata. The place for the freshest pastel de nata is Holy Nata. The bakery is down an alley, close to the Financial District, that feels a bit like hunting down a speakeasy. The shop is next to the bakery itself, where you can watch them being made.
There isn't a place to sit, but there are benches across the alley. The shop also has coffee.
Everyone needs to try these. They are rich, not overly sweet and the crust melts in your mouth. If I make it to heaven, I hope to eat one of these every morning with a cappuccino.
