Taos Pueblo, Taos, New Mexico
Taos Pueblo is open to visitors and is best seen by a tour. This dwelling place has been continuously occupied for about 900 hundred years. We had a wonderful guide who explained the history of the people, shared insights about the culture and talked by the life of the Taos Pueblan people of today. Not many people live full-time in the Pueblo today, but many return for ceremonial days. The Pueblo is designated as a World Heritage Site, so efforts are made by the dwellers to maintain the buildings in their original form.
The tour takes about an hour. Several of the rooms are open with food and crafts for sale. There is a very pretty church. (Photographs of the interior are not allowed). The surrounding area is also very pretty. The tours are very popular and there were lots of visitors. The Pueblo is less than a 15-minute drive from the center of Taos.
One of the most special things about New Mexico is that most of the Native communities allow visits. On our last trip, we visited the Acoma Pueblo. It is so interesting to learn about how people lived on the land, which seems both very beautiful and harsh. It was a great experience.
