Communion restaurant, Mission Hills, San Diego
Communion offers great views of San Diego and a global, coastal menu that makes for an interesting read. It is located on the rooftop of "The Susan" apartment building, which is pink, mid-century modern with a cafe at the bottom level. The building is on the corner of Washington and Goldfinch. You enter on Washington Street and there is a dedicated elevator up.
The rooftop is beautiful with almost 360 degree views, including downtown San Diego and the Cabrillo Point. There a two terraces and inside seating, as well. Very pretty!
We started with non-alcoholic drinks. I had a zero-proof version of a Paloma. Excellent. For a starter, we shared the chaat potatoes. This is a popular Mumbai street food. The potatoes were crisp and a nice contrast to the creamy yogurt and fresh herbs.
For main courses I had the dolmeh eggplant (baked eggplant with ground beef) and my friend had the catch-of-the-day in a Thai-inspired broth. Wonderful food and great service. The dessert menu looked intriguing, but we honestly didn't have any room in our tummies.
The restaurant has a smart approach to spicy heat. The dishes we had were mildly spicy, but there were thin rings of jalapeño on top, so it was easy to add them in or side-line them, according to preference.
We easily found on street parking along Washington Street. There are several restaurants nearby, but the surrounding area is a quiet neighborhood with trees and California bungalows.
This is a great place for a date!
