Murals at the Beach Chalet in San Francisco
We didn't eat at the Beach Chalet, but we went inside the historic building. The murals are by an artist employed by the WPA. (This agency was established by Roosevelt during the Great Depression as a way to combat rampant unemployment). The murals glow with life. They show the daily leisure activities of San Franciscans circa 1935 with a focus on ordinary people. The murals are well worth a visit. There is some information about the murals and it is free to see them.
The artist was Lucian Labaudt. He was born in France, but worked in San Francisco as a teacher at the California School of Fine Arts. He is also responsible for the murals inside Coit Tower.
The restaurant is upstairs and also looks nice. The building is located between the two windmills, along the Great Highway. There are public restrooms in the building.
Beautiful carved details on the stairs
