Mesquite Flat Dunes, Death Valley, CA

Sand dunes away from water are a rare sight in the United States.  Mesquite Flat Dunes is a small area with beautiful dunes and a mountain backdrop.  There are tall dunes, which judging by the lack of human tracks, must be difficult to climb.  There are small mesquite shrubs dotting the area.  Around each bush are intriguing tracks left by birds, snakes and lizards, showing that the area has plenty of life.   One looked to be a resident chuckwalla, with large paw prints and a dragging tail.  The most interesting question is why are the dunes in that particular location?  Nearby areas seem similar, but don't have dunes.

We spent about 30 minutes wandering around.  Apparently, you can slide down the dunes, if you bring your own sled.  There is a parking lot and the Stovepipe Wells is close.  This wayside area within Death Valley National Park has a hotel and gas station.
