Cantor Arts Center on the campus of Stanford University
There are two art museums on the campus of Stanford. We only had time to visit the Cantor Arts Center. This museum has the largest collection of works by Rodin in the U.S. (More than the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia!).
We started our tour in the Native American collection. Many objects were covered as part of the process to comply with NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act). It was very interesting to watch a video explaining the Act, which requires human remains and sacred objects to be returned to the original communities. There are contemporary works by Native artists on display, as well as ancient pottery pieces from civilizations in Mexico.
There was an outstanding show of photography documenting the impact of humans on the natural world. Many of the works really pushed the limits of what photography can do. "Second Nature: Photography in the age of the Anthropocene" is excellent!
We saw the collection works by Rodin, which includes many of his studies for "Gates of Hell". "The Thinker" is on display in a rotunda. The works by Rodin continue in an outdoor sculpture garden.
There is a lot to see! We saw about half of the collection. I hope we can return soon to see the rest and the other museum.
