Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Seward, AK
I saw pictures of the dome train and it looked like a lot of fun. I love trains. I would go to hell, if I could get there by train. We booked the Coastal Classic, part of the Alaska Railroad. The Anchorage train station is downtown. The train departed at 6:45 AM. We arrived at the station at 5:45 AM. Luggage is checked through to your destination, so you don't have to bother dragging your luggage onto the train. There is a coffee shop in the station. We had GoldStar Service, so we had a special car with an upper level. There is an outside viewing platform, as well. Breakfast was included. We were called downstairs in sections to the dining car. Breakfast was excellent!
The route was scenic. We had great views of the Turnagain Arm, mountains, lakes, a bear and three moose. The train moves along briskly, so it was impossible to get a photo of the animals. We arrived promptly at 11:20 AM in Seward. A free town bus took us into the center of Seward.
It was a lovely experience. Now, I want to take the train from Anchorage to Denali. Next year?
