Coya Peruvian Secret, Del Mar

Coya Peruvian Secret is a new restaurant in Del Mar located in a small house overtaken by a hot-pink bougainvillea.  I like Peruvian food - it is hearty, comforting and has a unique flavor palate.  The food at Coya presents the cuisine well.

We started with a pisco sour (pisco is the national liquor of Peru) and a passion fruit lemonade.  Both were great for a warm evening.  For an appetizer, we had yuquitas, which like french fries made with yucca.  They were excellent.  Yucca is a bit more fibrous than potato and with a sweeter taste.  For mains, I had a great lamb stew with potatoes, corn and big chunks of lamb.  This was slightly spicy and loaded with flavor.  My friend had a quinoa salad.  Quinoa originated in the Andes.  The stew was a generous portion and I had left-overs for lunch.

The desserts looked interesting, but we opted to walk down the street to Nice Ice Cream.

We had an excellent meal and I'm looking forward to a return visit.

The llama is wearing a mask, but is not socially distant
