Bunny Chow in Mira Mesa, San Diego
Camp Fire Grill - Bunny Chow is a small casual cafe serving South African cuisine. South Africa is a melting pot of indigenous peoples, Dutch, British and Indian immigrants. The dishes we had a Camp Fire Grill were heavily influenced by Indian cuisine. Our first course was naan bread and chicken curry. It was a small appetizer portion. The spice palate is different from traditional Indian food - there were more notes of cinnamon and mace.
Our main courses were chicken wings and "bunny chow". Bunny chow is a traditional and very interesting dish. It is a curry served in a quarter-loaf of milk bread. It was a convenient way for workers to carry their lunch. I enjoyed it! The bread is dense, so it doesn't get soggy. The bread is slightly sweet and a nice compliment to the spicy curry. It makes for a very filling meal.
The spice level is about 2/10. There is a peri peri sauce at the table. This is a delicious and very spicy sauce that can increase the heat of anything. There is also a selection of South African wines.
The menu is big and many of the dishes were unfamiliar. I'm looking forward to trying more. I want to try "biltong" next, which is a beef jerky. They have bottles of peri peri sauce for purchase.
