ICA North, Encinitas

The main museum for the Institute of Contemporary Art is in Balboa Park.  ICA North, in Encinitas, has a sculpture trail, learning lab and small gallery.

The Sculpture trail features twelve works of art along a nature trail.  I especially enjoyed the two birdhouses by Jean Bankemper.  I thought they were charming and very appropriate for the setting.  I did think some of the pieces were a bit lost in the plants along the trail, especially "Puente la marimba".  This piece, which symbolizes the border crossing between Tijuana and San Diego was easily overlooked.  Be sure to grab a map, so you don't miss anything.

The current gallery display, Superflex: Beyond the End of the World, imagines our plumbing left to be examined in a far distant future.  Plumbing and infrastructure that has been left behind as humanity flees rising sea levels.  This exhibit ends soon.

When you come to the entrance, continue up the driveway.  The first building on the left is the educational center.  There is parking past that, closer to the gallery.  From the gallery, you can pick up the sculpture trail.  It is a dirt trail and there is a moderate hill to climb.  There are many signs warning about rattlesnakes, so sandals are not a good choice.
