Ayutthaya is a small city near Bangkok that used to be the capital of the Kingdom of Siam.  Much of it was burned by the Burmese in 1767.  There are Buddhist temples there now, such as Wat Phanan Choeng that houses a huge gold Buddha.  There are also an staggering assortment of ruins that very impressive.  It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and well worth a day trip.
One of the many active temples also in Ayutthaya
